Congratulations. The Company will wish to know that there have been two recorded honours in the New Year’s Honours List:
- OBE – Freeman R Robson Esq. CEO of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
- OBE (Military Division) – Freeman Captain Simon Petitt RN. Former Senior Naval Officer HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH.In addition, the Immediate Past Prime Warden, Mr Deputy Doug Barrow, has been appointed Director of the UK Ship Register by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and he will step down as Chief Executive of Maritime London on March.
Many congratulations to all three.

HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH. The visit to HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH, which was due to take place in Rosyth on Mon 20 Feb 2017, will not take place. The Ship’s Company only moved on board last week and the Captain greatly regrets the requirement to cancel the planned Affiliates Day, but will identify alternative dates in due course.
Membership Matters. A quick check of the records of applicants and Freemen going forward to the Livery indicates that a number of applications have stalled and that there are a number of Freemen who have yet to be admitted to the Freedom of the City and then the Livery. Please could I call on the assistance of any Liveryman who has proposed applicants and ask them to encourage their charges to continue or, where there is a problem, ask them to contact the Clerk and I will assist in any way I can. Similarly, could I encourage those Freemen who have yet to do so, to apply for the Freedom of the City and then join the Livery. I include guidance of getting the former below:
Admission to the Freedom of the City by Redemption.
1. Eligibility. To be eligible for the Freedom through a Livery Company you must be:
- a Freeman of a Livery Company
- above the age of 21 years
- not an undischarged bankrupt
- never convicted of a criminal offence (convictions spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 need not be disclosed).2. Procedure. Admission to the Freedom of the City is conducted in two stages, both at the Guildhall:
- Application, to be made in person. In exceptional instances, and they must be exceptional, his can be done by the Clerk on your behalf.
- The ceremony of admission to the Freedom at the Guildhall.NB If your name appears on the City of London electoral roll your application does not require the approval of the Court of Aldermen and only one appointment is necessary. Please state “Ward List redemption, Livery Company” when making your appointment.
3. Documentation. The Chamberlain’s Court requires the documents listed below from all applicants. Photocopies are acceptable and all documents will be returned with the exception of the Company Freedom certificate, which should, therefore, be a photocopy:
- Freedom of Livery Company certificate
- A full Birth Certificate or adoption order*
- Marriage Certificate, for a woman who is or has been married
- Decree Absolute for a divorced woman
- A cheque for £100 payable to The Chamberlain of London. (Fees are given to the City of London Freemen’s School at Ashtead in Surrey.)
- NB: Translations must be provided by the applicant if appropriate.*A Full Extract from the Family Record Centre is available on application online at www.gro.gov.uk or by telephoning 0845 603 7788. The FCC also provides copies of Marriage Certificates and Adoption Orders.
4. Procedure for making application.
- Arrange an appointment with the Clerk to the Chamberlain’s Court stating that you are ‘by Redemption in a Livery Company’.
- Any applicants claiming Freedom by right of Patrimony or Servitude should state this when making the appointment.
- Take all the relevant documentation with you to the appointment.
- The address is: The Chamberlain’s Court, Guildhall, London EC2P 2EJ. The Court Room is situated on the Ground Floor, North Wing, Guildhall.

- The hours for admissions are: 10.00 – 12.30 and 14.00 – 15.30.5. Approval. Your application will be submitted to the Court of Aldermen for formal approval and, once approved you will receive a letter inviting you to telephone the Chamberlain’s Court to arrange a date for your Freedom ceremony. Once you have the date, inform your sponsors so that they can attend the ceremony with you.
6. Admissions. Admissions are carried out for each person individually in short but solemn ceremonies in the Chamberlain’s Court Room at the Guildhall, and are conducted by the Chamberlain, or the Clerk of his Court on his behalf. No special dress is required and family and friends are most welcome to attend. You will be required to read aloud the Declaration of a Freeman, and to sign the Declaration Book. Photographs can be taken after, but not during, the ceremony. Your Freedom certificate can be supplied, framed if you wish at an additional cost.
7. The Declaration of a Freeman.
“I do solemnly declare that I will be good and true to our Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth the Second,
that I will be obedient to the Mayor of this City
that I will maintain the Franchises and Customs thereof
and will keep this City harmless in that which in me is,
that I will also keep The Queen’s Peace in my own person,
that I will know no Gatherings nor Conspiracies made against The Queen’s Peace,
but I will warn the Mayor thereof, or hinder it to my power,
and that all these points and articles I will well and truly keep,
according to the Laws and Customs of this City, to my power.”
8. Admission to the Livery. You are required to inform the Clerk of the Company when you have been admitted to the Freedom of the City so that your admission to the Livery of the Company can proceed. Admission to the Livery is conducted at a Court Meeting and the next available dates for Admission are:
- Thu 9 Mar 17 – Followed by Dinner for Liverymen and professional guests.
- Thu 20 Apr 17 – The Installation Court. Followed by supper with the Court at a local restaurant.
- Thu 12 Oct 17.Monday Lunches at Ironmongers’ Hall. Ironmongers’ Hall holds lunches on Mondays and I attach the text of a letter from the Ironmongers’ Clerk below.

Monday Lunches at Ironmongers’ Hall
It was a pleasure to welcome most of you to Ironmongers’ Hall for Monday’s Clerks’ Briefing and lunch. Our Monday* lunches have been a feature of life in Ironmongers’ Hall for seven years now. As you may know, lunch is available to members of all Livery Companies and their guests. We much look forward to welcoming you, the members of your Company and their guests to our Hall. We are pleased to say that there is also a Carvery option.†
You can enjoy pre-lunch drinks in the drawing room before making your way to your table. Lunch will be served at a time of your choice between 12.00 midday and 2.00 pm. This is an ideal way of starting the week by sharing exceptional food at exceptional value with friends and colleagues.

All our food is British and much of it sourced locally from the Nevill Estate in Surrey. Our menus change twice a month. Please note that a two-course lunch will cost £30.50 and a three-course lunch £34.50.

THURS 23RD FEB 2017 – GLOBAL ECONOMY TRENDS 2017: IMPACT UPON THE UK MARITIME INDUSTRY:
This joint National Maritime and SSA (Shipbuilders & Shiprepairers Association) event will examine the risk factors affecting the Global Economy and the impact upon the UK Maritime Industry for 2017 and beyond. In particular, the impact of global banks’ exposure to the shipping industry will be analysed and its impact upon world systemic risk will be assessed. In addition, a SWOT analysis will be conducted with respect to London becoming the predominant centre for shipping related finance and investment (relative to Germany).

EASTER BANK HOLIDAY 13TH -16TH APRIL 2017 – TALL SHIPS FESTIVAL:
A fleet of international Tall Ships and crews will gather in Greenwich, London over the Easter Bank Holiday. As the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival 2017 Organising Partner we are offering exhibition, sponsorship and hospitality packages, opportunities relating to this exciting four day international event, which attracted over 1.1 million people in 2014.

Brigantes Events. I have been asked to draw the following 2017 programme of Brigantes events to the Company’s attention.
Tuesday 25th April 2017, 10.15 for 11.15 – Brigantes Golf Day, Ganton, North Yorkshire
The Brigantes Golf Day is at Ganton Golf Club near Malton in North Yorkshire, one of the world’s top 100 golf courses. It is one of only three British courses with the distinction of hosting the Ryder Cup, the Curtis Cup and the Walker Cup, and was the venue for the 2016 English Men’s Amateur Championship. Open to all Liverymen with a recognised club handicap, a very favourable rate has been negotiated for a superb day’s golf followed by an early two course supper. If Liverymen would like to stay overnight on the Monday, which several Liverymen will be doing, the Greyhound Inn at the end of the Club drive is ideal and modestly priced. Wednesday 26th July, 12.00 for 12.30 – Annual Brigantes Breakfast, St George’s Hall, Liverpool
The 2017 Brigantes Breakfast will be held at St Georges Hall, Liverpool, in the presence of the Lord Mayor, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley. St George’s Hall is widely regarded as one of the finest neo-classical buildings in the world and is a Grade I listed building. It was reopened in 2007 by HRH The Prince of Wales after a £23m refurbishment programme. Last year’s Brigantes Breakfast at Cutlers Hall, Sheffield, attracted over 300 Liverymen and their guests, with a number travelling by train to Sheffield from London for the day. At least that number are expected this year at Liverpool. As previously, current Livery Masters/Prime Wardens/Upper Bailiff attending will be processing into lunch. St George’s Hall is directly opposite Liverpool Lime Street Station and 2hr 14m from London Euston. Full details and a booking form will be circulated later in January.
Friday 15th December, 16.00 – Brigantes Winter Gathering, York
Following the fully subscribed 2016 Winter Gathering at Chester Cathedral in December, arrangements are going into place for the 2017 Brigantes Winter Gathering to be held in York. The format will be similar to that of the last two years – a late afternoon reception and dinner followed by the Christmas Concert which this year will be in the magnificent York Minster. York Station is 1hr 50m from London Kings Cross. Details will be circulated during the summer.
About Brigantes
Over 1,200 Liverymen of the City of London are resident in the North of England. Forty one Companies have ten or more Liverymen in this area, to which should be added the many Liverymen throughout the UK and worldwide who regard the North of England as their spiritual home by adoption, birth right or interest. The aim of Brigantes is to enable Liverymen of all Companies to meet together in the North, especially those less able to travel regularly to London, and so the Brigantes Breakfast was born – the name deriving from the Brigantes tribe which occupied a similar geographical area in pre-Roman times. All City of London Liverymen are welcome at Brigantes occasions.
